Interview with Bill from Jim’s Antennas in South East Queensland and South Australia

Eden Exchange recently spoke with Bill who is a Regional Franchisor fo Jim’s Antennas in South East Queensland and South Australia. Bill looks after all franchise owners in the region. He discussed with us his franchising and business and journey and also provided some unique insights on the Jim’s Antennas business.

Thanks for speaking with us Bill. Can you tell us about your background and career? Why did you get in to franchising and how did you first get involved with Jim’s Antennas?

Bill – Jim’s Antennas in South East Queensland and South Australia
I originally ran my own antenna and satellite business working with 6-10 contractors on a full-time basis. We had a retail outlet selling installation equipment and providing an installation service for customers that needed us.

I also had an strong interest in HiFi and home theatre. This inteterest led me to search out new ways to make our business more sustainable for the future. Jim’s Antennas was perfect for us. We looked at their systems, visited their head office and were very impressed with their training, management systems, back up service and support.

Having franchisees who owned their own businesses and who really cared about looking after their customers appealed to us and we felt this was the path we should take.

You currently have franchise territories available in your Queensland and South Australian regions. Which areas do you specialise in? What are some of the factors that make these areas unique?

Bill – Jim’s Antennas in South East Queensland and South Australia
We have an area with huge potential growth. The population is growing every year and there are lots of new housing estates where we do all of the cabling work.

Because of the NBN, increased data consumption by everyone, more TV channels being added by stations and the continued expansion of digital services, we have more customers than we can look after. We need more franchise owners to keep up with demand.

What advice do you have for someone looking to run a franchise for the first time? What’s the key message you tell new franchisees?

Firstly, talk to me and talk to existing franchise owners. The Jim’s group is a well-known and successfully branded Australian business that has worked for over 25 years. It is a very good system that can make you very successful, help your customers every time and help you grow a good branded business that will be an asset to you and your family.

Work hard, be committed, keep up to date with technology and do all the training courses that we offer. Be part of a bigger business that will help you grow and provide exceptional service to customers. By doing this you will always have referrals and repeat customers.

Audio, video, TV, data, networking and wireless access are all growing. People need us to cable their homes. People are time poor and they cannot do it themselves.

What challenges have you faced to get the business where it is today? On the other hand, what are some of the key achievements you are proud of?

I’m proud we’ve found the right people to be part of our business as well as our steady growth year on year to where we are today. Dealing with the ups and downs of a business is challenging but coming out stronger, embracing the digital era and feeling like our franchise owners are part of our family is extremely rewarding.

What’s the most interesting part of your job? What drives you to do what you do?

Every day is interesting there is always something new to learn. I like the industry. I enjoy going to work and helping people is always a good feeling.
